This doily has quite a long history. I have one of these on the coffee table. Made in size 80 DMC thread, it's the perfect size for a three wick candle so that only the ruffle is visible. About 11 years ago, my sister in law visited for the first time. She noticed the doily and said several times that she liked it. She thought it looked more modern and not too lacey (?!?) Not sure I agree with that, but I can't say much, since it is one of the very few pieces of lace I have out on display. After the visit, I started making one for her as well.
I completed a few rounds and then the doily sat in my WIP pile for several years. Last year, I decided to pull it out as one of my active WIPs so that I could finally finish it and give it to her. At this point I wasn't even sure if my sister in law still liked it. It had been 11 years after all... Most of the ruffle was completed during my work trips. It was a perfect mindless piece to take with me to work on in a hotel once my work for the day was done. I also had tentative plans to visit my brother this year so I had a semi deadline to motivate me. I actually finished it this summer, but didn't want to post it until I gave it to her.
I debated whether to give it to her outright or whether to just set it up and wait until she notices it. For fun, I decided to go with the second option. Unfortunately my brother saw me put it out, but he was good on his word and did not mention anything to her. My sister in law did not notice the doily until several days later. My brother tried to explain it to her, but wasn't sure if I made it for her or if I brought my own on loan (!). After giving my brother a hard time about that, I assured my sister in law that I made this one for her and I will not be asking for it later. I have no idea where my brother came up with that idea! Turns out my sister in law still likes it, so in the end, I'm glad I made it for (and that I finally finished it).
Made with DMC Special Dentelles 80 in ecru. The pattern is from a Weiss book of patterns. Not sure which one, but I think I've seen it in several publications.

ReplyDeleteI find this story so amusing! First of all, I admire your using size 80 thread! It's not exactly an 'easy' tat with all those ruffles! I looked in my one Rita Weiss book and the pattern isn't there so I can't quite tell what the pattern is like, but it looks like a ton of work! Can't imagine why she said it doesn't look too 'lacy'!!

It took me 6 years to finish a lap quilt that I gave to my sister-in-law for their family room, after saying it would be finished 'soon' when I showed her the finished top. I lost steam on it (even with machine quilting) and put it in a closet for 5 of those years! Embarrassing, but she has now had it for six years! Time does march on!
